National Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday, September 8.
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the many valuable lessons I learned from my grandparents, especially during those summer months when my family and I would stay with them in Syracuse, N.Y. Their home, situated just 200 feet from Oneida Lake, was a place where countless memories were made.
As a kid, I had no idea this lake had an actual name. I thought it was called “Grandma’s Lake.” I also thought my grandparents owned the lake. How incredibly nice it was of them to share their lake with so many people!
Although I eventually learned they did not own the lake, I enjoy thinking back on how generous I thought they were. Even though I was wrong about them owning the lake, God still used it to teach me a lesson about being generous. I learned many other lessons from my grandparents as well.
The summers with my grandparents were filled with simple joys: catching tadpoles in their little pools, chasing fireflies on the grassy bank, and marveling at the weeping willow tree that my grandfather had planted years before I was born. This tree, starting from just a small seed, grew tall and strong, offering shade with its graceful branches—an enduring symbol of growth and purpose.
Grandparents have a unique gift of wisdom, gained from their life experiences and the lessons they’ve learned. This wisdom is a treasure that can guide their grandchildren in becoming responsible stewards of the gifts they’ve been given, including financial gifts.
There’s an old proverb that says, “From little seeds grow mighty trees.” This saying reminds us that even a small beginning can lead to something significant. Just as the tiny seed my grandfather planted grew into a magnificent tree, a small financial investment can lead to greater understanding and responsibility.
For as little as $10, grandparents can help their grandchildren plant a seed of financial wisdom by opening a Flex Savings today. This small step can foster a lifelong understanding of financial stewardship.
Together with Texas CEF, grandparents have the opportunity to provide a savings place for their grandchildren that has Kingdom impact. Visit our website at www.texascef.org to download an investment application today!
